Exhibition and project ‘Vale do Mondego’

Jan 2012: In February 2012 an exhibition in the Amsterdam Center of Photography will take off, as a result of a Masterclass. I’ll combine documentary photography of the family living at cultural and biodynamic domain Vale do Mondego (Portugal), with landscape and art photography, made during my art residency in 2011. Currently, I’m finishing the last works of the project Vale do Mondego. Accompanied with ink and photography negatives, I’m entering a magic world of magma, minerals and geology. Relating to natural processes of the elements and stones, like oxidation or hydroxidation. Is it possible to free matter of its clotted existence or to connect granite with other forms of being?

New project

Jan 2012: In 2011 I’ve been researching historical global trade relations, with an eye on natural resources, the impressive Dutch Golden Age, modern industries and sustainable future perspectives. A new documentary photography project – on social and natural awareness within the current (free market) economy – is born. How to photograph the intrinsic value of a wood forest, iron in a factory or the inner life of a coworker? Let’s do it!
Suggestions for interesting locations are warmly welcomed, thank you.

Her Circle UpClose Interview

Mathilde Jansen: Documentary Art Photography & Intercultural Communication
Dec 1 2011 (interview Aug 2011). Mathilde Jansen’s work is a documentation, exploration and reconstruction of socio-economic, inter-cultural and environmental developments and occurrences. Through the use of collage and both documentary and staged photography, Jansen juxtaposes reality with fantasy in order to create new perspectives and possibilities both for today and the future and to represent natural, industrial and cultural diversity. These images pose questions to the viewer, in which real and imaginary worlds coexist, and relate to contemporary issues, media representations and inequalities.

Artist in residence ‘Dominio Vale do Mondego’ (Portugal)

In April 2011, the family Sligting/Schaap – founders of the ecological and cultural Dominio Vale do Mondego - will offer me a ‘quinta’ (house) at their domain. Enabling me to create autonomous works, in the green valley along the river Mondego in Portugal.
I’ll be inspired by the psychology of and interaction with landscapes and biodynamic agriculture whilst being welcomed to observe the life of a family building their own part of paradise. In June, a selection of new works will be available.

Notification on documentary photography as a way to see life

My time has come to embrace documentary photography; it has taken me ten years to come to this point. To my experience, documentary is a way of working, rewarding real life as art and as a form of true creativity and power of nature and mankind. With traces of light and shadow; new chances and a past; buildings and ruins. Reality itself will be my work- and playground. I’ll both respect and surpass boundaries of ‘objectivity’, with social and conceptual interactive pictures.
Collages won’t disappear as such (from my portfolio), but will have a different purpose for my work.

Collage ‘Shooting for the Sun’ inspires children and staff for a sustainable art contest

Sep 2010. The work Shooting for the Sun (collage cut-outs, 2010) visualizes a sustainable future and has been used as a source of inspiration for a drawing contest after completing the environmental-friendly renovation of primary school De Triangel. BEI advised the renovation process of De Triangel. Theo Rietkerk, deputy for the Dutch Province of Overijssel donated the collage to De Triangel, on behalf of BEI. The parties carried out their own interpretation of the work. See http://www.goedbei.nl/wp-content/uploads/School-Triangel-superblij-met-duurzame-oplossing.pdf

Exhibition Picturing Power & Potential (Oakland, USA)

Nov 2010. Mills College, an independent liberal arts college for women founded in 1852 and located in Oakland, California, has just opened a brand new  building on campus devoted to business and economics. Picturing Power & Potential will be exhibited in the lobby and main floor of the Mills College Art Museum until the end of 2010 (actual closing dates will follow).
Both the San Francisco Arts Commission Gallery and the International Museum of Women are thrilled about the partnership, and that the exhibition is going to gain a broader audience. It is exciting to imagine the prospects for increasing dialogue within an academic community  about women’s varied roles in the global economy.
